Elyah Lopian

And there is an amazing teaching from our tradition that helps explain why.

It's taught in the name of Rabbi Eliyahu Lopian, a 20th century master of the Musar tradition.

And he teaches it in the way of a parable.

A man is at an inn.

... your own Shulchan Aruch, your own Mishneh Berurah, your own Biur Halacha, your own Shaarei Tzion, and it's basically a, an encyclopedic work where you c- put together from all the Sefarim, you know, from Rabbi Eliyahu Lopian, from Shlomo, from all the Sefarim, from all the Musar Sefarim, including Beth HaLevi to the Sefer HaSharim, Shaarei Teshuvah, all the Haintike Sefarim.

You have even, uh, Basic Shem.

I mean, everybody is in there.

However, there were quite a few Mussar roshe yeshiva or Mussar personalities who either survived or escaped or had simply emigrated from Eastern Europe prior to the war.

Think people like Reb Eliyahu Lopian or Rav Dessler.

Now, just to elaborate on the scale of decimation for a moment, because we generally [chuckles] focus on the ones who made it out.

We love talking about survival and escape, and those are much more comforting stories.

The rosh yeshiva, the entire yeshiva, the family of the Alter, they all were killed.

And, and, and, and they...

There's, there's nothing left of, of Kelm except for Kelm talmidim who survived, uh, you know, isolated instances, or those who had emigrated before the Holocaust, like I said, Rav Dessler, Reb Eliyahu Lopian, or Rav Chatzkel Levenstein in Shanghai and others like that.
