Ellen Foley

Yeah, because I think the first time you hear Mick...

I think it's like quite early on, I forget the order all the tracks come in, where he's singing with Ellen Foley, because I think he was in a relationship with Ellen Foley at the time, and she was the singer that sings with Meatloaf quite a lot.

And so it has that kind of big rock sound rather than like a punk sound.

Yeah.

The song has been speculated to be about Mix pondering his future with the band.

But Mick, although foggy on the exact impetus for the song, says it was more than likely about a row with his girlfriend at the time, U.S. singer Ellen Foley, famous for singing a duet with Meatloaf on Paradise by the Dashboard Light.

The song in its remixed combat rock form became The Clash's only number one song, reaching the top spot in the UK.

Mick employs a very unusual technique for the arrangement, Spanish lyrics echoing the English words.

Written primarily from a man-on-the-edge, taxi driver-esque perspective, Joe uses being trapped in a literal New York City traffic jam to observe the deep-seated decay, commercialism, and wealth disparity of modern American society.

It's a funky groove with spacey dub echoes brought up in the mix.

Mix then-girlfriend Ellen Foley provides the backing vocals.

Next, the song Adam Tan, the extended outro original mix, recorded December 81 at Electric Lady Studios, New York City.

He and Joe Strummer, with this new song in mind, ended up in New York to record at Electric Lady Studios, the studios Jimi Hendrix had built.

Jones shacking up with his then-girlfriend, Ellen Foley.

You know, the other singer on Meat Loaf's Paradise by the Dashboard Line, actor, singer, Ellen Foley.

McJones stayed at her place.

...

... forgot about that song.

Yeah, Ellen Foley, who did some co-lead vocals on a couple songs.

Oh, there was another Blockhead, Davey Payne, who played sax on some songs.

And then there was Rick Giscone, who played trombone on several songs.

Yeah, yeah.

Uh, next up we have Hitsville UK.

But you're, you're listening to songs and saying, "Who's singing this? Who?" There's a way-- There are kids singing this song.

No, there's a woman, you know, it's Ellen Foley, you know, who sings some of this, who was Mick's girlfriend, the singer and actress.

Uh, so they're just all of these, this whole rogue's gallery of people dropping in, but you don't know anything about them or why or who.

I mean, that's why upon first hearing it, I was just confused.
