Ella Hibbert

You've done a lot of high latitude sailing.

And as you said, the Northwest Passage recently, to my surprise, I got a message whilst you were in Nome, you met up or bumped into Ella Hibbert, who I'm a designated person ashore for.

She obviously went through solo through the Northwest Passage and then down through the Bering Straits to St Paul's Island and tried to basically go up to do the Northeast Passage this summer but unfortunately her and three other people's permits were basically cancelled because the Young Ice was closing in already.

Do you think, I mean, as you said, we spend our life looking at screens, which is quite ironic because we're having this conversation over screens from two different places in the world.

It was absolutely breathtaking.

That was Ella Hibbert, better known as Ella in the Arctic, who is taking on the extraordinary challenge of sailing single-handed around the Arctic Ocean.

In this episode, we talk to her about her journey through the Northwest Passage, a fire on board, running aground, and her rather unusual route into professional sailing.

a complete change of direction from a career with horses.
