Elephant Butte, New Mexico.

I feel so gullible.

She knew how quickly a routine conversation turned lethal, how to read a room, how to spot a threat before it even walked towards her.

And as Cynthia would later reflect when she looked back on her life before Elephant Butte, "I had lived a hard life.

I knew what bad people were like, and I knew how to survive on the streets, but nothing in my life could have prepared me for David Parker Ray." When the two crossed paths, David thought that he was picking up an easy target, someone vulnerable, someone no one was going to look for.

He didn't realize he was dealing with a woman who had spent her entire life studying human predators.

It was kinda loose.

Quietly, without drawing any attention, she began working at it, searching for play in the metal, looking for a flaw in the setup before they reached their destination.

They drove about a hundred and fifty miles south of Albuquerque, arriving in a very remote town called Elephant Butte.

Ray pulled onto his property, parking near a single wide mobile home, and beside it sat a large custom outfitted trailer.

Well, now that we don't have a home, we can go down there and get a houseboat.

We needed to have the rain, and I think they said from Tuesday on to Sunday, it's going to be high chances of rain all week long, which is absolutely fantastic.

You know, and the bad, you know, I was posting pictures of Elephant Butte, the lake there at Ground Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.

It had been down to 1%.

I mean, it looked like just a canyon with little lakes here and there.
