The attack was relentless and ferocious, eventually leading to the death of Isildur's three elder sons, Elendur, Aratan and Cirion.

Knowing that all was lost, Isildur entrusted the heirloom shards of Narsil to his esquire Ottar.

ordering him to escape to Rivendell at all costs.

Yet he kept the ring with him.

It is in these final moments of despair that Isildur finally recognised the horrific magnitude of his mistake, the hubris that led him to claim the Wehrgeld vanished, replaced by the grim reality that he could not master the ring.

Speaking to his eldest son, Elendur, Isildur confessed his tragic realisation.
