Waz, not Wuz, is from Detroit, which I didn't realize.

They're two producers who changed their last names to Waz and made a bunch of producer-driven music that spanned genres with the help of guest musicians, like Ozzy Osbourne rapping over Electro on the song Shake Your Head, Let's Go to Bed.

But in this case, they're creating a song in the genre of Sweet Spot Strut.

Why are you guys laughing? I've never heard WAS pronounced Waz.

[electronic music] Today's deep dive is built on, uh...

Well, it's this really fascinating stack of musicology research, historical articles, and just these incredibly detailed analytical notes.

Right.

It's crazy to think about.

It is.

I mean, we are talking about the bedrock of modern spiritual jazz, the pulsing core of electronic music, and, uh, literally the structural foundation of hip hop.

Yeah, and I promise you, by the time we finish unpacking the mechanics of what these two artists actually did-

The loop based, which I've never heard, you know, us being referred to in that way, but you are right.

And it is interesting that like, and I guess there is a real parallel with a lot of electronic music in the sense that like our things can be very minimal and very repetitive, but then they just, you just sort of add nuances as they evolve so that it isn't really copy paste, copy paste looping, but sort of like an evolving loop.

But the, the, hypnotic aspect of what we do sometimes I think is really tied to this idea of like a simple repetitious things that just sort of grow kind of subtly.

Is there a reason why you never got bitten by the electronic music bug? Considering you also live in Berlin, which we'll talk about later.

I mean, to some degree I did.

Like I was into, there's a band called, there's an artist named Pol, P-O-L, when I was living in New York in the late 90s that was really amazing.

added layers to them that broadened their identity rather than subverting something we were doing.

One of the reasons I ask is that there is one song on the album, I think it's actually the opening song, which is an explicit nod to Massive Attack.
