And in other news, tonight residents in the Murray Plains electorate will have the opportunity to hear from candidates contesting next month's Victorian state election at a forum being held by the Central Murray Environmental Floodplains Group.

The event at the Glass House in Kerrang will start at 7pm and run until 9pm and we'll see Zoe Cook from the Victorian Greens, Brett Hosking from the Nationals and Garner Smith from One Nation Victoria answer questions on what they will do if elected.

A candidate forum will give residents of the Murray Plains electorate an opportunity to learn more about the people seeking election at next month's Victorian state election.

The Central Murray Environmental Floodplains Group is organising the event at the Glass House in Kerrang this Thursday running from 7pm to 9pm.

Chair of the group, Geoff Kendall, describes the forum's format.

That follows the resignation of Garner Smith from the role on Wednesday of this week.

Councillor Smith has stepped down as mayor after declaring he'll vie for the Murray Plains seat as a One Nation candidate at the November state election.

He does remain a councillor and is not at this point taking a leave of absence due to the ongoing absence of another councillor there.

The new mayor will serve until the mayoral election on the 18th of November, and at the moment, Deputy Mayor Ross Stanton is acting as mayor.

That's because Councillor Garner Smith resigned the mayoralty on Wednesday.

He stepped down after declaring he'll vie for the Murray Plains seat as a One Nation candidate at the November state election.

He remains a councillor and won't take leave due to the ongoing absence of another councillor.

The new mayor will serve until the annual mayoral election on the 18th of November.
