Elaine

Like many of the riots before, those in Omaha only ended after federal troops were brought in.

The final riot of the red summer that we're going to discuss today is the one that occurred in Elaine, Arkansas, on September 30th.

The racial tension in Elaine was particularly high leading up to the red summer of 1919.

The black population in Elaine was substantially higher than the white population.

It was a ratio of roughly three to one.

Despite this, despite the community being by and large black, the whites ran the government there.

Some of these deliberations lasted less than 10 minutes.

The only Black people set free were those that agreed to testify against other Black people and who had agreed not to attempt to unionize or better their living situations.
