the devil figure being a force of liberation in many ways for many people, but also being used by the other side to demonise those people as witches, as heretics, as whatever, when actually what they're experiencing is more of a liberation, whether that be sexual, whether that be queer, whether that be socially.

So, writer-director Juan Lopez Moctezuma, who had produced Alejandro Jodorowsky's early films, Fando Alnes and El Topo, and Moctezuma had made a couple of his own films by this point.

There's a film called The Mansion of Madness and Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary, which...
P

both made a little bit of an impact, but he really pulled out all the stops for this one.

If he put Holy Mountain or El Topo, I might go that way.
C
47:36Chris BrownGUEST
But even just without thinking, I enjoy Exorcist 3 more than I enjoy Santa Sangre.
C
47:43Chris BrownGUEST
And I also think Exorcist 3 is saying a lot.

K
44:42KristenHOST
That was one where my professor, who was social self-prez, said, if anyone needs to leave during this film, please do.
K
44:50KristenHOST
You are allowed to.
K
44:51KristenHOST
He said, every single college I've showed this at, there have been people that have walked out.
E
44:59EmekaHOST
So now we're getting into film.

Jodorowsky, Santa, Sangre, I really liked because it's a simple story and there's sort of a semblance because like, you know, Holy Mountain or I haven't seen El Topo, but I would imagine that's just much more psychedelic and much more the narrative isn't really there.

And what's the other one that people were talking about? Oh, the one that we were just talking about earlier.
Godmonster of Indian Flats
K
27:22Klon WaldripHOST
Opening just days after The Exorcist, the title no doubt confused audiences who may have wondered if the God Monster was some kind of demon.
K
27:31Klon WaldripHOST
Perhaps it could have found some success in the emerging midnight movie audience who would have seen the humor in it, though it lacks the dope cloud tone of El Topo or Fritz the Cat.
K
27:43Klon WaldripHOST
There Was a Chance, a different kind of mutant sheep movie, could have found success along other eco-horror movies of the time like Willard and Frogs, but it's much closer to Night of the Lepus, a 1972 misfire about giant bunny rabbits.
K
27:59Klon WaldripHOST
Producer Robert Bremsen wouldn't give up on eco-horror, though.

Episode 67: Dead Man's Shoes (2004) & Mandy (2018)
C
59:37Craig JohnsonHOST
Mandy, on the other hand, is an explosion of ideas, and these include a Charles Manson-esque death cult, satanic biker gangs, chainsaw battles, tigers, animation, and extreme violence.
C
59:52Craig JohnsonHOST
Influenced by revenge cinema like Death Wish, it has been described by the director as a psychedelic rock opera, although others have also suggested that it fits into the idea of the acid western, a phrase coined by critic Pauline Kael to describe Alejandro Jodorowsky's film El Topo.
C
60:11Craig JohnsonHOST
This is not to say, though, that it is completely removed from the feel and visuals of his directorial debut.
C
60:18Craig JohnsonHOST
Much as with Black Rainbow, Mandy too takes place in an imagined 1980s, heavily inspired by the VHS covers that he used to see in his local video store.

Yeah.
G
7:03Gigi Saul GuerreroGUEST
Um, but, but everyone's reaction to the director, Alejandro Jodorowsky, at, yeah, that name everybody knows from Holy Mountain, El Topo.
G
7:13Gigi Saul GuerreroGUEST

J
9:46Jarrod HornbeckHOST
I only knew stories of those movies, but they were ones-
