And it's run out of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.

Its chief is a captain named Edward Ruppelt.

And that summer, there's a wave of sightings across the whole country.

Reports are piling up and the Air Force is stretched thin and the project is short on staff.

So back to Saturday night, July 19th, around 1140 p.m. Ed Nugent at the ARTC Center sees those seven targets south-southwest of the city.

And these targets were slow, they were around 100 to 130 miles an hour, with bursts of acceleration that would take them completely off the radar.

And that detail comes mostly from Ruppelt's later account and from newspaper coverage.

Nugent calls over Harry Barnes, the senior controller on duty.

But one interesting thing did get released, and that was something that the politicians were chasing.

which was a 1952 Edward J. Ruppelt recording.

And Rhett Burleson really wanted that one.

And they actually got that one released.

He was given an Air Force briefing.

And Ruppelt, by the way, Captain Ruppelt, he led Project Blue Book, which was the U.S. Air Force's UFO investigation.

And key points from it, basically, he said that 20% of 800 reviewed reports remain unexplained, that there were...

the reports are clustered around places like Las Alamos, Albuquerque, White Sands and Oak Ridge or nuclear research and things like that.

Unfortunately, although it is a video file, it's actually an audio file.

So CBS News, quote, the Pentagon released its sixth batch of files on UAP, including an hour long audio recording and transcript of remarks by Air Force Officer Edward Ruppelt.

from 1952, in which he explains the service's investigation into UFO incidents.

In the presentation, Ruppelt revealed that roughly 20% of the 800 UFO reports the Air Force had investigated were still a mystery.

Interesting.

Anyway, David Grush, Representative Burleson and I, before I left his office recently, got a 1952 recording that was still classified from Blue Book talking about the seriousness of this issue and all the crazy shit that they're seeing near nuclear sites and test rangers.

Edward Ruppelt, who eventually defected from Blue Book because he realized it was a cover-up in the 50s, was talking to the Beacon Hill study team at MIT Lincoln Labs, saying, hey, the Air Force has ruled out mass hysteria.

We're seeing shit during nuclear tests.

There was an Edward Ruppelt from Project Blue Book recording, some Apollo-era material suggesting there was anomalous stuff on the moon.

And there's always been a much greater sense of urgency.

Um, the book, um, the UFO report by, uh, Edward J. Ruppelt, um, It was one of the primary references for the Aero Historical Report, for example.

And it talks about a case in which basically an Army signals intelligence base has a UFO sighting and it bypasses the Air Force reporting system completely and hits Washington because there were some VIP visitors there.

Again, it was tracked on radar.

And I needed one more book so I wouldn't have to pay shipping.

And there was a report on unidentified flying objects by Air Force Captain Edward Ruppelt.

He had headed Project Blue Book back in the early 50s.

This was in 1958.

Blackwell's statement used the place name Mansville for the initial police report.

Edward Ruppelt, reviewing the case years later, wrote Maysville.

Both versions appear in the case literature.

We will leave the initial location at the level the records support, rather than turning that uncertain place name into a precise point on a flight map.

A technical intelligence inquiry wanted to identify what had prompted the pursuit.

Answers to one question could inform the other, but neither office could obtain Mantell's own final explanation.

Edward Ruppelt later described the press pressure that accompanied the case.

He wrote that the investigators anticipated a flood of questions and wanted a quick answer.
