And when I say deep outline, I don't just mean a longer list of bullet points.

it's usually about 10 to 20 000 words broken down scene by scene and it can include everything from the general description to details about the setting character motivation snippets of dialogue or narration maps research anything that helps you get inside the story I'll link below to a more in-depth video about the actual deep outlining process that I use and that my editing clients have used.

But basically, you start with the traditional bullet point outline.

This is a high level outline, a few pages.

And when you do finish your deep outline and finally start drafting, something really nice happens.

It's great that you write faster.

It's great that you wind up with a draft that needs less editing.

But the real joy of deep outlining for me is how it changes my relationship with my drafting process.

I use minimum silence rules so I do not negotiate with myself.

They're not rigid laws, but they stop me from over-editing.

Within a sentence, micropauses are often meaningful.

I do not flatten them by default.

And it makes you subconsciously terrified of what's going on.
