Edith Stein, which is St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, her designation as a Catholic martyr drew debate from Jewish organizations who argued she was killed by the Nazi regime primarily for her Jewish ancestry rather than religious hatred, contrasting with the church's view of her targeted martyrdom.

So the church said she was executed basically for being a Christian or a Catholic.

And the Jews are like, no, she was of Jewish descent.

Edith Stein, who's really a hero of the 20th century, one of the great minds of the 20th century.

She was martyred in Auschwitz.

She was a convert.

Edith Stein, known as St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Carmelite Martyr, Edith Stein was born into an Orthodox Jewish family in Breslau, Germany.

As a teenager, she rejected her family's faith and declared herself an atheist.

A brilliant scholar, she completed a doctorate in philosophy at the age of 23.

In 1942, all Jewish Catholics, including members of religious orders, were arrested and deported.

Come, Rosa, she said to her sister, we're going for our people.

At age 51, Edith Stein died in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942.

She accepted her fate in solidarity with the Jewish people as an act of atonement for the evil of her time and a conscious identification with the cross of Christ.

Well, there's a lot to take care of without realizing the importance of work.

And it was as I was explaining this to our seven-year-old and why it's important to work and learn how to do the housework well, I was reminded of Edith Stein.
