The friction between the two men intensified, culminating in Edward’s decision to place his brother George, who was courting the queen, in a position of power, further marginalizing Warwick.

The political fallout reached a fever pitch in fourteen sixty-nine when Warwick staged a coup against Edward at Edgecote.

The king was captured but not held for long.

The situation ended with Edward’s escape to Burgundy, where he was given shelter and an opportunity to rebuild his forces with the help of the French King Charles VI.

He challenged Edward's authority by allying with Margaret of Anjou and exiled the king.

He held York until a decisive victory at Edgecote forced Edward to return.

But this power swap showcased how alliances could reverse fortunes.

The subsequent battle at Barnet in 1471 was the decisive reversal where Warwick's forces were slaughtered by Edward's troops under a fogged field.

North Wales archers wearing the three feathers of the Prince of Wales fought for Lancaster in the snow at the great defeat of Towton on the Palm Sunday of 1461.

The archers of Gwent, led by Herbert, fought vainly for York at the Battle of Edgecote in the summer of 1469.

And the Welsh waver and traitor was seen in battle also.

Grey of Ruthin led the van for Lancaster at the Battle of Northampton in 1460, and caused the battle to be lost by deserting to York at the beginning of the fighting.

The king proceeded northwards to meet them, but ordered also Lord Herbert, whom he had created Earl of Pembroke, to bring up forces from Wales, and sent a message to his brother and the Earl of Warwick to induce them to come to him peacefully.

But the insurgents came upon the Earl of Pembroke and his Welsh levies near Banbury at a place called Edgecote in July, and gained a complete victory, taking prisoners the Earl and his brother, Sir Richard Herbert, whom they afterwards beheaded.

Clarence and the Earl of Warwick came over from Calais along with the Archbishop of York, who was Warwick's brother, and had once been Edward's chancellor.

But their coming was not to assist the king.
