This is one of those nights.

So I want to get to Ed O'Keefe in Dallas for day two of the Republican midterm convention.

You can see the convention floor there.

And there's been all manner so far of Trumpian promises and rhetorical exaggerations.

Was it worth the money at the time? We'll see.

Of course, he's promised payouts before without following through, including $5,000 a person in savings from his DOGE program and $2,000 payments in revenue from tariffs.

Will this time be different? Ed O'Keefe is at the convention in Dallas with more on the politics of all these promises.

How's it all landing?

He says he'll promote Republican candidates ahead of elections in fewer than two months.

CBS News senior White House and political correspondent Ed O'Keefe is covering the convention and joins us from Dallas with more.

Ed, they've got the red carpet rolled out.

What should we make, though, of the absence of some GOP candidates from the convention who are in tight races right now?

Early voting starting very soon in several states.

It's interesting, too.

By the way, that's Ed O'Keefe, and he's gone through some kind of transformation.

I remember Ed O'Keefe as like this pudgy reporter who sat in.

that she makes sure that her office, which was really a library, but it's really what she worked out of, she made sure that office was right next to TR's office.

And apparently, like what Ed O'Keefe said, was that this allowed her to, I mean, quite frankly, eavesdrop on what was going on in that office and would conveniently sort of go in and come out and offer commentary when she thought it was appropriate.

So it's a great example, I think, and we see this in a lot of the essays on first ladies, particularly up to this point in the project, because we haven't gotten to the, what we would say the modern first ladies yet, with Eleanor Roosevelt forward, we haven't gotten there yet.

So we've seen these first ladies that have been constrained a bit by the role and what was acceptable for women, how do women to engage in politics.

It's not the final word, but it could have an impact on the midterm elections as the Trump administration pushes for tighter national voting standards.

so far so good the supreme court in a 63 split ruled the trump administration can move ahead with a plan to tighten rules for mail-in voting we want to have honest voting in our country an executive order president trump signed in march instructs the department of homeland security and u.s postal service to create state citizenship lists using federal databases that check the citizenship status of voters under the plan the postal service can only deliver mail ballots for federal elections to people on the lists a coalition of nearly two dozen mostly democratic controlled states sued to block trump's plan arguing it's unconstitutional

President Trump, speaking of, is in Texas today hoping to help a Republican Senate candidate while facing criticism for his own plan to lower beef prices by bringing in more beef from overseas.

I think there's been an increase of a few dollars from anything from hamburger meat to New York strip steaks
