Easy Cure

They had Smith, Tolhurst, and I think Pearl Thompson stripped down to the three piece, which is what eventually recorded Three Imaginary Boys.

But that's where they changed their name to Easy Cure first.

Which was based on, and I think that this is speaking of Lowell, that band name came from a song that Lowell wrote.

So technically, the name The Cure, but even before that, Easy Cure, came straight from Lowell.

That was not Robert Smith's...

Yeah.

And there's a fourth member, a guy by the name of Pearl Thompson, who is going to drop out of this band.

It's known by the name Easy Cure at that point.

But he'll come back into the story in the second part of this episode as a very important player.

Until then, how did the cure get their start? Well, first of all, they're called the easy cure.

And it's kind of a time-honored English way.

They win a talent show at their local school.

So another school friend of Smith and Tolhurst adopted the stage name Paul Thompson to avoid confusion with another Paul Thompson, the drummer for Roxy Music.

And by 1977, the band Malice changed their name to Easy Cure, which was then condensed to simply The Cure shortly afterwards.

They changed the name because Malice was this, like, sort of metal punk kind of band, as I understand it.

And they kind of wanted to track a different direction, so they didn't want to have the baggage of that.

Yeah.

Well, I can also see just, like, using The Cure as a shorthand for Easy Cure.

Like,

people refer to Iron Maiden as simply Maiden.
