Helen Louise Salisbury was born in Eastland County, Texas in 1931.

Helen's father died in a car accident when she was really young and she spent much of her childhood living with her maternal grandfather.

And after he passed away, she moved to Hacquiam, Washington, where she lived with a cousin, then the family of a high school friend, and then finally a foster family.
