East Troublesome Fire

And what spurred this research was the occurrence of these really extreme and unusual kinds of fire events.

So a great example here in Colorado is the East Troublesome Fire that burned at the same time as the Cameron Peak Fire.

and lit off on about 100,000 acre run in less than a 24 hour period in October of 2020.

And that's a really explosive fire growth.

And to the point where, you know, that was the kind of thing that was surprising to me was seeing these kinds of fires that were just really, really dramatic in terms of how quickly they consumed large areas.

And oftentimes these are the kinds of fires that are burning as crown fires moving from, you know, tree top to tree top.

And the question was, do these kinds of fires, you know, not only account for disproportionate impacts in terms of area burned, but do they leave behind a different kind of landscape? So is a 100,000-acre fire or 100,000-acre fire run, like the East Troublesome Fire, is that different than, say, 100,000-acre fires? And the answer is, yeah, these things are very different.
