East Punjab

And, you know, unfortunately, it was a very painful and very violent and very traumatising partition.

Shimla became the capital of East Punjab.

So we had East Punjab and West Punjab.

Following independence, it served as the capital of this newly independent state.

Then in 1948, the state of Himachal Pradesh was formed.

And this was initially as a chief commissioner's province.

In other words, they decided East Punjab was too big and too diverse to be ruled as one unit.

So they cut it up again.
