Because the main character, Derek, which is a fish, he is so brave when he launches himself out of the fishbowl in the story and into a neighbouring aquarium that is in the pet shop where the story is set.

And for our early childhood educators who are listening, these themes link well to our early years learning framework, version 2.0. particularly if we think about learning outcome two, where children are connected with and they contribute to their world, and also learning outcome three, where children have a strong sense of wellbeing.

So through this story, Derek is on a little bit of a journey.

So we see him explore feelings of belonging, identity and emotional resilience, even when he does face loneliness, when he's in his fishbowl by himself.
