Dyke march

Oh, my God, I was at the same Pride she was.

I didn't see her, but she was at the Dyke March this weekend.

I love her.

Do you know what I mean? It's very, like, um-

It's so liber- it's so amazing here.

The Dyke March really is the greatest ensemble of queer minds we have going down one street.

Yeah.

Then like the next day, I think I see her at something else.

Oh, and then it's like, it's the fucking dyke march.

So we like go to do the dyke march.

It's like the cloudiest day.

No pansexuals.

It's

really scary times.

We're like in the Dyke March, it's like so cloudy.

I have a friend that's doing research into how the, okay.

So the first dyke March ever happens at the March on Washington in 1993.

And it is the lesbian Avengers are a huge part of putting that together, but they are not the only lesbians that put that together.

There were dykes in San Francisco.

And so there's a lot of, there's a little bit of contention from the coastal dykes on like who actually had the idea and how it all came to pass but the lesbian avengers kind of became the faces of it and are you know for better or for worse and this is just like the dankiest thing ever of course we can't decide who should get the credit like that's

we all get the credit um we're all there we're thinking about it we were all there in our hearts

but newsweek uses this image obviously of like lesbians in mass like gathering in the thousands for the first time ever at the march on washington the very first dyke march and then new york lesbian avengers bring it back to new york and so then of course now we have international dyke marches you know still happening to this day as whether it's a part of pride or not but what's great about it is they've maintained for the most part um no sponsorships no corporate You know, no politicians, no advertising, like it's just a completely, you know, permits, you know, individual dyke organized situations.

Anyway, so I think it's important too that 1993 was the beginning of this sort of like dykes all coming together under this banner of wanting to be visible specifically.

And it also gave an opportunity for me to build my audio diary practice.

So whenever I do research, I keep audio diaries throughout the process at any moments of significance, right? So When I go to the archive, I'll record audio there or before and after, before and after interviews, and before and after any moment, such as in this case, going to the Dyke March in Toronto while I was writing this book.

And so you hear some of that audio in there, right? So marches and protest audio alongside the interview material and archival material.

You hear from the sound workers themselves, and you hear a little bit more of that personal element that I bring into the openings of these chapters, but then you get to actually hear it.

I mean, trans people are maybe slightly more than 1% of the population, generally.

We're very, you know, that's why, you know, at Dyke March yesterday, I saw a lot of people carrying signs that said, you're worried about the wrong 1%.

And I thought, that's, I agree.

I can tell you the trans people are not the ones responsible for housing prices or the new pipeline getting built.
