'Cause for the first, for the pilot and maybe the first eight, a lot of it w- uh, was, uh, shot on MiniDV with shotgun mics.

Yeah.

Like the same ca- I had this camera, the Sony Mini 150, uh, Sony 150 MiniDV camera.

Got a shotgun mic and that is...

You know, we shot a lot of the pilot with that.

I'm, like, riding in motorcades and flying on Air Force Two-

That's so crazy

...

I've gotta find this VHS or MiniDV tape of me doing it, but everyone's like, "Oh my God."

Here we go.

Save it.

I mean, the terminology was familiar, overwrites, inserts, trims, assembles, but I didn't really understand what I was looking at.

So eventually I hooked my mini DV camera up to the computer and I started learning how to log and capture footage.

And back then, you know, capturing happened in real time, a 60 minute tape.

Well, it took 60 minutes to capture, but there was actually something useful about that.

Then about a decade later, another one of those moments happened.

I was in Haiti in 2010.

I was filming with my Sony V1U, the same video camera I'd used on my first documentary in Nepal, and I was still recording onto mini DV tapes.

But the week before leaving for Haiti, I bought another camera.

Except now it didn't have to.

It could sit on a memory card, a MiniDV tape, a hard drive, or eventually, in a cloud account.

And years later, you could still find it.

And that's where something interesting happened.

So I didn't...

I- It was 330 hours of tape, of MiniDV that said Kanye something, and number ones that we digitized.

But I had like 600 more [laughs] MiniDVs-

... that said Pitbull and this person and John Legend and all these, and J. Ivy and all these different people, and Takitha, you know, Macely Jamison.

Wow.

That's a lot.

330 MiniDVs and the rest on digital and all the other ways of filming and VHS.

So I can definitely tell you it was huge.

And then even going from that, we had a good, we used to use mini DV tapes.

I think that's way before, probably way before you're born.

Mini DV tapes and like nowadays you just put like an SD card or whatever in and you just copy the files over.

Back in the day, there was a capture function inside of Premiere.

And what that capture function was, it would play back your tape on your camera in this window.

And, um, yeah, I was just making stuff all through high school and, and, uh, went to, uh, film school at USC in the screenwriting program.

So when you were shooting stuff, you know, growing up, were you shooting it on all sorts of like different formats like VHS and, and, uh, I'm sure, you know, uh, other formats are escaping me, like MiniDV and stuff like that?

Yeah.

There was, um, one of the really old cameras that was kind of, I can't remember the name of it.

Uh, it's basically that camera that Marty McFly has in Back to the Future I, the little red guy, and that's actually in Dude Bro.

Um, so that's, I guess, kinda how I started was with that camera.

And then, you know, I moved up to MiniDV and, uh, it was like Hi8, MiniDV.

Um, and not as fucking badass and sexy as the cameras are now, you know? It's like, God, you know, I feel like an old man.
