So this was published just this past week on August 21st.

The Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined Uber 825 million euros, which is 966 million USD, for deactivating driver accounts through automated systems without adequately informing them, according to an August 17th decision reviewed by Reuters.

The penalty will be the second highest issued or second largest issued yet under the Europeans GDPR.

So which stands for General Data Protection Regulation.

Okay, then on to the Netherlands, where on the 21st of August, the Dutch Data Protection Authority fined Uber.

Again, this is the fourth fine for Uber by the Dutch DPA.

This time, it's almost 825 million euros.

beaten only by Meta's £1.2 billion fine in 2023, though Uber has already confirmed that it will appeal.

The Dutch Data Protection Authority found that between 2018 and 2022, Uber systems temporarily blocked drivers suspected of fraud, including those flagged for allegedly taking unnecessary detours to cruise fares or accepting trips they did not intend to complete.

The low customer ratings could also trigger temporary or permanent deactivation.

Regulators concluded that these were solely automated decisions because no person participated in the decision-making process.

We are seeing massive real-world economic harms play out.

In Europe, the Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined Uber eight hundred and twenty-five million euros, roughly nine hundred and sixty-four million dollars, over automated driver suspensions.

Uber's software deactivated driver accounts, sometimes permanently, with no human ever reviewing whether the system got it right.

European privacy law limits fully automated decisions that significantly affect a person's life, and removing someone's ability to earn a living falls squarely into that category.

I'm sure it's part of the, um, EU AI Act as well.

So the story that was in this news th- in the news this week is that the Dutch Data Protection Authority, um, started investigating complaints that Uber had been deactivating driver accounts through an automated process without sufficient warning or human oversight.

So again, automated, that could be AI, it could be non-AI.

Um, but again, it's basically technological decision-making without human oversight that has a significant impact on the individual about which the decision is being made, which GDPR, you know, that's a big no.
