Durham Cathedral

Yes.

So a- as a result of being in Winchester Cathedral, I very much admired the two leaders of the music in the cathedral, Martin Neary, who I've already mentioned, and his younger colleague, James Lancelot, uh, who later became the organist of Durham Cathedral and is now still very much alive and with us.

Martin Neary recently died.

I idolized these two guys, who were both very fine organists, and I started getting into organ repertoire.

the rest of the Northeast wasn't

... certainly infrastructure, and the rebuild in St. James's Park is gonna be part of that because it, it, it really becomes this cathedral in the city center, which anyone who's been to Newcastle, it, it, you know, it dominates the city rather like Durham Cathedral dominates Durham, and it, and it, and it feels [laughs] kind of like the different religions of those two cities are, are symbolized in, [laughs] in those two buildings.

But, um-

Well, certainly-

You get all kinds of, a Norman church is very different than a Languedoc church.

Think of Durham Cathedral.

That was a great political statement by William the Conqueror.

It started in his time.

A year later, William the Conqueror was crowned King of England there on Christmas Day.

Many churches in England were built in the Norman style of the Romanesque architecture, including Durham Cathedral, Eli Cathedral, and many of those village churches we see in Midsomer County, especially those with the clock towers.

Interior walls were often decorated with paintings of religious subjects, especially biblical scenes and images of an enthroned Christ.

Many of the paintings have been lost, either to decay due to damp or by being painted over during the Reformation.

Under the east cliff there is nestled the oldest part of Whitby Town.

Here is the old town hall, built upon a great central pillar, thicker than those of Durham Cathedral, with a pillar of more slender diameter for each of the corners.

Here are two narrow streets running parallel with the cliff, and half a dozen courts running up the lower slope before the cliff begins.

Under the town hall is the market as you see it today.

We went into the newer St. Non's Chapel and we lit a candle.

You've lit a lot of candles in various chapels and shrines over the years, haven't you? I'm thinking Durham Cathedral, Norwich Cathedral, Walsingham, Julian of Norwich's Church.

What is it about lighting candles? Is that something that's important to you?

Well, it's my hobby.

It's really,

really small.

But I kind of liked that because I remember when we went to Durham Cathedral, we sort of wondered whether St. Cuthbert would like it.

Do you remember that conversation that we had?

But what we do a lot of our big overhaul jobs, we put these things in.

Durham Cathedral, I think we put in about 1902, 1903.

It's come back to the workshop twice since to be totally rebuilt.
