Drum Major Institute

This year, Dr. King's only grandchild, Yolanda Renee King, will cast her first ballot, and her family is working to mobilize Black and Latino voters around the country.

Joining me now are Martin Luther King III, the chairman of the Drum Major Institute and son of Dr. Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King, Andrea Waters, King, who is the president of the Drum Major Institute, and their daughter, Yolanda Renee King, director of youth programming at the Drum Major Institute.

Martin, your father's generation sacrificed so much just to secure the right to vote.

When you see people today who feel like their vote doesn't matter, what do you say to them?

I want to go back to the Kings with just nine days from the midterm elections.

We're talking about where voting rights stands as millions prepare to head to the polls.

Joining me now are Martin Luther King III, chair of the Drum Major Institute and son of Martin Luther King Jr., Andrea Waters King, president of the Drum Major Institute, and their daughter, Dr. King's only grandchild, Yolanda Renee King, Director of Youth Programming at the Drum Major Institute.

Andrea, let's start with you.

Thank you for joining us for another episode of The Contrarian Pod.

On The Tea with April Ryan, Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King, the chairman and president respectively of the Drum Major Institute, joined April.

With only 20 days ahead of the midterm elections, the trio discussed building Black and brown political power and fighting legislative oppression at the ballot box.

And what I would add as a mother, you know, our daughter, um, just turned 18 in May.

Mm-hmm

... like what are the laws, you know, in your, in your home state, you know? So that is definitely an area of focus.

And secondly, um, at the Drum Major Institute, we, two years ago, started a, um, coalition with Mi Familia Vota, building a Black, brown coalition of political power in this nation.

And so we think it's critically important to continue building that, that sisterhood and brotherhood and the Black, uh, Black and brown political power.
