I think, you know, you have to entertain your reader.

You know, it depends on whether anyone's entertained by this.

I was just going to say, is this for them or you? I should note, too, that this was, Drive My Car was my favorite movie of that year.

And I did make it sort of a personal pet cause of mine to make sure that as many people saw it.

I'm-- I've seen a couple of his films.

Hamaguchi, uh, he's directed Drive My Car, Evil Does Not Exist.

Um, really liked Evil Does Not Exist.

The ending, sort of, I wasn't sure about, but I really like the rest of the film.

Haven't seen Drive My Car 'cause the runtime's a bit intimidating, and I-- that's such an embarrassing thing to say.

[inhales] Um, could Prime Time get in here? It's pretty low on the list of, of movies on this website in terms of odds.

Um, Adventures of Cliff Booth.

I don't know either.

I w- I, I keep, I'm like I lean towards All of a Sudden just because, like, Drive My Car was such a, like-

... a breakthrough, and like I know...

watching all these movies the idea of like skipping three hour one is like crack to you you're like i can't like i can't like this is the best i have never made a better decision in my life so uh day one right in the morning i was like i checked out the new Ryosuke Hamaguchi film, which was three hours and 15 minutes long.

And I knew I was very excited about and curious about because I really loved his film from a few years ago called Drive My Car.

And for anyone who was also a fan of Drive My Car, this film has lots of characters doing therapy through smoking, talking, and experimental theater.

So it is almost a direct sequel in that way.

I personally found this one didn't quite hit me as hard, even though I do think it has a lot of really interesting things going on in it, including characters who are trying to maintain a sense of sensitivity and dignity.

But at the same time, those two actors, from what I understand, are filming this all in a an actual nursing facility with non-actors.

And some of the ways that the filmmaking and the actors are connecting with these real patients is very beautiful.

So I would still highly recommend people check it out, even if I didn't personally like it quite as much as Drive My Car.

So what is next time on Collector's Cut? How do we continue the Criterion season by going with something much more modern? We're going with a film called Drive My Car, which has been on my radar for a couple of years as part of the collection.

I've waited to see it, so

I'm looking forward to it.

Hamaguchi's films, obviously.

All of a Sudden and Drive My Car and Evil Does Not Exist all premiere there.

But it's like those are non-commercial.

Maybe what we're really... like seeing here is is not so much that like festivals aren't necessary or festivals aren't like what have you it's that the separation between the big studio films and they're like and and the separation between studio films and festival films I don't even want to say independent films because I don't think that's what it is it's like there's studio films and then there's festival films like that separation is getting wider and wider and wider

Well, and that's like, it's, you know, Hamaguchi there is like...

I feel like an early adapter of that with like drive my car where it's like drive my car got pulled into this festival circuit where it's like,

Let's talk about the Academy Awards, Matt, because as you said, a lot of nominations.

Best Picture, Belfast was nominated along with West Side Story, Power of the Dog, Nightmare Alley, Licorice Pizza, King Richard, Dune, Drive My Car, Don't Look Up, and the winner, which was Coda.

And CODA, as we'll get into probably in January, we'll do an episode on that because that's when Sundance happens.

It was the first movie to ever win the grand jury prize at Sundance and the Academy Award for Best Picture.

but you could see a lot of what was going to happen in coda from a mile away belfast was a lot less predictable i know it was sentimental but that was the whole point of the story so i think you could make a real good case for belfast here i also have to say i can't stand the fact that they have like 10 movies nominated now go back to when it was five so that the nomination actually means something The movie also got nominated for Best Director.

Kenneth Branagh did not win.

He was nominated along with Amaguchi for Drive My Car, Paul Thomas Anderson for Licorice Pizza, Steven Spielberg for West Side Story, and the eventual winner, Jane Compton for Power of the Dog.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
