The European Central Bank is expected to raise rates in just a few hours, the first of several big rate moves ahead of the Fed and Bank of England meetings next week.

And here to unpack the task before policymakers is Dow Jones Newswire's economics editor, Paul Hannon.

Paul, at this point, the ECB's rate hike is practically a foregone conclusion.

We'll know very, very, very soon.

The markets think that it's not just one, that there are a few to come, and they do what markets do, which is sort of try to get three or four steps ahead, sell things that perhaps they maybe shouldn't, and it all has a little bit more of an impact on sentiment, confidence, and investment than the people who decided to go for the decision in the first place would've liked.

I mean, that's one of the reasons why central bankers spend so much time trying to explain and what their thinking on things is so that there won't be those kinds of surprises when they eventually sort of unveil the big decision.

I was in Korea recently.

And of course, the ex- experts are all captured, and they're the ones who don't wanna see power.

If you'll indulge me, I had a bit of a front row seat at, at some of this, at the way the US establishment was belittling the Europeans, saying they didn't do proper economic analysis, and that's because I was in Brussels between 2001 and 2005 actually covering competition policy for Dow Jones Newswires and for The Wall Street Journal Europe.

And looking back on it, I wasn't really equipped to understand the implications of all of this.

We've all done that as journalists.

So this will have an impact on, on growth, it will have an impact on consumers.

I've been speaking to Wall Street Journal markets reporter Chelsea Delaney, and Dow Jones Newswire's economics editor Paul Hannon.

You know, we've seen some recent instances in which they've escaped sandboxes and decided to hack into the systems of other institutions, and that sort of thing really worries financial regulators.

[upbeat music] Now to a few economic updates from China, where the country's three largest state-owned airlines are feeling the pinch as the result of a weak domestic market and high fuel costs.

Aircraft fuel for Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern Airlines rose between 35 and 38% over the first half of 2026 compared to last year.

Google said starting August 30th, its site reputation policy enforcement will no longer impact search results for users in all EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

News Corp, owner of Dow Jones Newswire and The Journal, has a commercial agreement to supply content on Google platforms.
