The Home Secretary has urged police leaders to be ready to move quickly and effectively in dealing with far-right groups who are intimidating communities over immigration.

Shabana Mahmood's comments came after disorder last weekend when dozens of men dressed in black and wearing balaclavas blocked the Port of Dover to protest against small boat crossings.

Hundreds of protesters also gathered in Portsmouth after a migrant boat was brought ashore.

During a meeting with police chiefs this afternoon, Ms. Mahmood called for forces to make better use of intelligence and full use of the powers at their disposal.

The BBC understands some forces are now considering completely banning face coverings in specific areas.

Shabana Mahmood told police chiefs that lessons must be learned from last weekend's protests after hundreds of black-clad and masked men occupied the main road in and out of Dover Port for hours.

Ms. Mahmood said the scenes there and near Portsmouth, where 120 migrants were brought to shore on Sunday, had invoked a fear factor and had communicated an obvious malign intent.

So as we're speaking, we are in the wake of what looks like a new era of civil uprising.

We had in Dover, black-clad men in masks protesting the immigrants and illegal immigration that's coming into the port of Dover, and in Portsmouth, when there was an attempted mega dinghy landing-

Divers recovered a bottle of Guinness believed to date to 1864 from a shipwreck off Dover, England, where it had been buried underwater for more than 160 years.

They think that the additional bottles, possibly full cases, remain at the site, while beer specialists at Belgium's KU Loven analyze samples to determine the stout's condition, flavor, and whether its DNA could help recreate the original recipe.

At about half past six on the night of the 6th of March, 1987, the unthinkable happened to the British car ferry, the Herald of Free Enterprise.

Having just left the Belgian port of Bruges-Zeebrugge for Dover in England, she was only 90 meters from shore when she capsized, leading to the deaths of 193 passengers and crew.

The seven-year-old ferry was a roll-on, roll-off craft, which meant it had doors at both the bow and the stern.
