Doug Walters

He's the youngest.

I reckon Doug Walters and maybe not Dougie, but there was a day in cricket in the 60s and 70s.

You got to 30.

You retired.

He's the youngest.

I reckon Doug Walters and...

Well, maybe not Dougie, but there w- there was a day in cricket in the '60s and '70s, you got to 30, you retired.

Now, I know it's very different now.

One might've been a dodgy decision, but they owed us a couple, the New South Wales umpires.

And, uh, and then, um, they ended up six down, and Doug Walters and Kev Gillece saved the match.

I then went out that night to some, some friends' place who had been, um, a lady I was in school with and known from 10 years of age through the, the, the local church and what have you, had moved to, to, to New South Wales and, uh, had children and what have you.

And, uh, the teams in those days were announced on the radio 8:00 on the ABC News.

And I just couldn't believe that I was in the dressing room.

with Doug Walters, Rick McCosker, John Dyson, Len Pascoe, Steve Rickson, Jeff Lawson.

I mean, all these guys had already played test cricket.

Peter Toohey was there.

$100 gross, $12 tax, take home $88.

For me, I couldn't believe I got paid to play for New South Wales, but it didn't take me long to think, wow, Rick Madoska's got, like, three children.

Doug Walters has got four kids.

How does he take $88 home and put that on the table for being away for five days? So in some respect, it didn't change a lot.
