Double bind

think the double bind gives us some options here.

Yeah.

Because it's kind of like Inventation to Love and Twin Peaks where they're kind of giving you a perspective, right? So we have, and I can't believe we're at the end already, but...

But that's how this film is edited, right? So we have the murderer is an illusion she created.

These are double bind kind of revelations.

But illusions can't kill, so kind of like what Laura is saying.

But what if that illusion found someone to possess, right? And this is all dialogue that's happening in double bind.

uh to obtain peace harmony even power right without slaughtering each other but as the method spread so it turned over ever more things into scientific objects into definable manipulable essences substances, whatever the technical term should be here.

Soon, the scope creep reached humanity itself, and another worse double bind arose.

Man now became the sole master of the universe, but also, as part of the universe, subject to his own manipulation.

Man the scientist, and also man the guinea pig.

And this idea was developed by a French historian and philosopher called Remy Braque.

This is where I first encountered it.

He wrote a whole book called, I think, Kingdom of Man, where he points and details out this double bind.

So this second double bind was existential, ontological, right? It was much deeper than the first epistemic one, which is just, you know, what is the nature of our knowledge? Ultimately, the guarantor of human personhood, dignity, and freedom can only be a personal God.

But you look wound up.

You may be protecting them from the narcissist, but instead they view you as the one who is anxious, edgy, neurotic, or controlling.

These relationships are what we call chronic double binds.

It's just a way of saying these are situations in which you cannot win.

Because it is often this portraying you as controlling or anxious or whatever, compulsive, it's often an inaccurate characterization of you as wound up and anxious, though you are more anxious than you would be if your life had-- if life hadn't handed you this toxic relationship, that in fact, without this relationship around, you're actually quite full of equanimity and serenity, except when you're around these relationships.

They don't, they don't want to stay in something awful, but they want to stay in the relationship.

It's the ultimate double bind, catch 22.
