Dorian mode

Mm.

And then the other scale they use, which is actually my favorite, is [clears throat] what you could call a Dorian pentatonic scale.

So if it's a G, you're playing an F pentatonic scale against it.

[guitar music] And what I like about this one is there's no third, so it's isn't really major or minor.

And minor has, of course, a complicated system of chord structure that is established for how music theory works in that.

Whereas, you know... you're Dorian, you're Lydian, you're certainly Locrian modes.

And we'll talk, I will rant, I am sure, in a few minutes about modal music and what it means to be playing in a mode.

You know, there aren't chord structures that necessarily lend themselves well to establishing that kind of sound.

Yes.

It happens to have the same notes as the C scale, but it also happens to have the same notes as a minor.

It also happens to have the same notes as D Dorian.

And there's no particular like inherent music theory reason to treat C major as the default.

There are patterns, and there's a relationship between the keys that's pretty cool, and that's what I wanna talk about.

So starts in the key of E, goes to C sharp minor, or depending on how you consider one of the chords, C sharp Dorian mode.

Ooh, I know about that, Dorian, Lydian, Mixolydian.

Yeah.

... think of Dorian as if a minor scale goes like, da da da da da da da da.

A Dorian mode would go da da da da da da da da.

You get different sounds and they have very fancy names.

Dorian, Ionian, uh, Mixolydian, Locrian, and those things.

But the thing is, you're already playing modes.

If you've ever played a minor scale, you're playing a mode.

[guitar playing] But what if I started on, I don't know, let's see, the second degree of the scale.

So it was an A. Let's start it on a B and go from B to B.

[guitar playing] That's called the Dorian mode.

[guitar playing] What if I started on the third degree of the scale? [guitar playing] That's called Phrygian.
