Doors Open Days

An historic document linked to the reign of Robert the Bruce is set to go on public display as part of Scotland's Doors Open Day 2026.

The Royal Charter, thought to date back to about 1314, is one of the oldest documents in the Hill Collection of Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow.

It records the transfer of lands, including Moydart, Arisig and Morar, from Christina of the Isles, who was connected to Robert the Press by family and marriage, to Arthur Kimbell, Arthur Campbell.

An expert has said the document is a significant early example of a woman asserting ownership of land in her own right in medieval Scotland.

The Royal Charter is one of our oldest documents with a colourful history linked to the reign of Robert the Bruce, Royal Factory of Procurators and Glasgow Chief Executive John McKenzie said.

It's just one of the many rare items the public will be able to view as part of Doors Open Day 2026.

The Royal Charter is housed inside the faculty in Nelson Mandela Place in the city centre and is one of many rare items that will go on display this month.

Now, Doors Open Day gives people a chance to explore places that are very often closed to, well, closed the rest of the year.

We certainly have.

But I dare say many cooks would've thought, "Thank heavens, what a, what a relief." But yeah, for something that's completely invisible from above ground, it's an impressive structure.
