DLSS 5 Mods Go Wild, AI Safety Researchers Quit Anthropic and Google, Altman Open to Slowing OpenAI Down + more!

In the demo, Dev Parsable showcases it running in a windowed setup over a YouTube video of Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay.
J

The demo also shows the mod working while Doom 3 is in a windowed mode and ends with a game running in a borderless full-screen mode.

One courageous Redditor placed a DLSS 5 filter over Linus and Elijah at the Tech House, a criminal offense because it's a forced psychedelic experience I didn't want to have to endure seeing, especially on a Friday.
J

Modders are also finding unique and clever ways to tinker with DLSS 5, like getting it running on Nvidia RTX 20 series cards and finding ways to squeeze out as much extra performance as they can, like in the case of the mod Neural Upstream.

And Google researchers used AI to stitch millions of 2D images together into the first complete 3D map of a fruit fly's brain and nervous system.
J
8:08James TribeHOST
They've reconstructed more than 166,000 neurons, a neuroscience milestone that could help researchers understand how brains work.
J
8:15James TribeHOST
Naturally, software engineers then used that info to make the digital fly brain play Doom by feeding the game's visual information into the simulated fly brain, and translating its neural activity into controls, like moving, turning, shooting.

that was the 64 in general.
S
49:13SethHOST
sure but zelda was like a big deal even games that had like open areas was a big deal yeah i remember riding a horse around freely in that field and back then that was like revolutionary oh for sure um and so yeah just looking back at it i i respectfully um appreciate how far we've come because that game at one point just like when i see doom 3 Which still, I think, looks pretty decent even nowadays, surprisingly.
S
49:37SethHOST
But I see people talk about it nowadays who weren't there when it first came out.
S
49:42SethHOST
And I'm like, you don't realize Doom 3 and Half-Life 2, when those games came out, were the best-looking games that ever existed at one point.
S
49:49SethHOST
And so it's always interesting to look back at games as they've... gracefully depreciated over time right but uh still recognize that you know these were revolutionary games and so um yeah anyway side tangent um this looks awesome though i love i love the environments and stuff and it still has that very late 90s uh um atmosphere and and kind of characteristics to it which i think is fun how how like ridiculous and cartoony how people move and stuff yeah so yeah anyway uh this is a game i definitely want to pick up i'm definitely excited for it um i thought this looked cool and uh yeah anything else

DF Retro Super Show #022: Metal Gear Solid 4 + The MGS Master Collection Volume 2
J
15:43John LinnemanHOST
This was the era of the normal map.
J
15:45John LinnemanHOST
It's the same rendering stuff that we saw pioneered, not necessarily pioneered, but it was very popular in games like Doom 3, where essentially, rather than rendering out geometry, you would essentially create a texture of... that's from a higher detail polygon source that then sort of simulates the light and shadow through just using a flat texture and then layering that on top of a somewhat simplified, but still pretty detailed model.
J
16:11John LinnemanHOST
And this was, this is still a very common thing, but the problem at the time was that the lighting of that era was not robust enough for it, I would argue.
J
16:21John LinnemanHOST
And just normal maps with the type of lighting of that generation create this very kind of like weird look that i also don't really love a lot like pretty much all the games from that era have it with those like deep fake shadows

Red Faction: Origins Movie Review
A
3:32ArnieHOST
This game came out in 2001, which was the prime time in my mind for shooter games.
S
3:40StuartHOST
Yeah, I watched a walkthrough, and this looked like any other Doom or Quake or whatever.
A
3:45ArnieHOST
Exactly.
A
3:46ArnieHOST
It was very much like that style of Doom 3, Quake when Quake was new sort of thing.
A
3:55ArnieHOST
And it was such a throwback simplistic shooter that was just so damn fun with all these different weapons.
A
4:04ArnieHOST
You had a rail gun that you could use to see heat signatures through walls and then shoot through a wall and get a headshot and kill an enemy before he even knows you're there.
A
5:11ArnieHOST
And then they got to Red Faction 3, and I played some of this.
A

And this one was also really fun, and I wish I had more time.

If you played Unreal Tournament or Doom 3 or those kind of chunkier PC games, shooters this is very much that and very recognizable like very much PC like it's even I think you know like if you've played Halo similar but I think Halo is even more modern than the feel of this game.

I also want to give a shout out here before I forget the voiceover by the real Davey Reden is really good for someone who like, you know, I don't know that they've done other voice acting before or since, but providing the voiceover, providing this as like a fictionalized version of themselves and telling you this story.
D
19:15Dave JacksonHOST
This is like Davey Reden, the real person playing a fictionalized version of himself, giving voiceover as that fictionalized version.

Then Doom 3 is a remake of Doom 1, where you're just a nameless Doom Marine.
K
73:52Kevin ImpellizeriHOST
Then you have Doom 2016... and Doom 2016 reestablishes that now the Doom guy is like an ancient berserker figure from like millennia ago who has waged eternal war on Hell, and that's further expanded into Doom Eternal, and I haven't played Doom the Dark Ages, I imagine it does more of that then too, and that's not even including the Doom movies, like, this thing, there's no character bible because this has been done different ways over and over and over again for the past 30 years.
