Despite its prestigious founding, the early history of Yan was anything but easy.

The state was located on the northeastern frontier of the Zhou world, surrounded by powerful tribal groups such as the Xianrong and the Donghu.

Its mission was to defend the Zhou realm and expand Chinese influence into these northern territories.

Life on the frontier was harsh and dangerous.
