Outside of this new internet thing, getting records in front of people meant navigating the maze of getting played on the radio and being sold in chain stores, two places indie labels historically did not go.

[upbeat music] In 2004, Chris Chen was the general manager of Domino Records America, where he helped break Franz Ferdinand.

He has a lot of experience with big box retailers, places like Best Buy or Barnes & Noble that were huge and looked like big boxes.

The Best Buy weekly circular cost, like, an untold amount of money.

They refused to participate in the debate about selling out.

But these opportunities weren't a given just because a band lived in the city.

Daniel Kessler, Interpol's lead guitarist, had a desk job at Domino Records alongside Chris Chen.

Chris is as baffled as anyone about how Interpol became the only band from that scene to stay on an indie label, Matador Records, for its debut album.

For just over a decade now, Casey has fronted Protomartyr, one of this century's most significant underground rock bands, which also features guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard, and bassist Scott Davidson.

On September 25th, 2026, Domino Records brings us the seventh and possibly angriest album by Protomartyr to date.

So, you know, record labels, I guess, are going to take the chance on the more exciting thing and hope that it hits.

In February 2007, Domino Records, which is also the home at the time of the Arctic Monkeys, Frames Ferdinand, Animal Collective, they decided to take that chance and, you know, say it was the next big thing in British music.

So they signed them.

Their debut album came out.

Yeah, right? I mean, that's kind of like British music in these last five years of the NME list, really.

Like Arctic Monkeys and Animal Collective had plenty of spots on that.

So this Domino Records, major player.

Their debut album came out on the 16th of June, 2008.

We did.
