But when he had said this many times, and the season was passing by without any pig appearing, they had lost hope, when at length there arrived a peasant from the Pieve a Quarto, who wished to have a Saint Martin painted in fulfillment of a vow, but had no means of paying for the picture save a pig, which was worth five lire.

And that he was greatly enamored of this opinion is recognized from his works, in which, in truth, the manner is seen to be somewhat hard and sometimes suggesting stone rather than living flesh.

Be this as it may, in this last scene, which gave infinite satisfaction, Andrea portrayed Squarcione in an ugly and corpulent figure, lance and sword in hand.

In the same work he portrayed the Florentine Noferi, son of Messer Pala Strozzi, Messer Girolamo della Valle, a most excellent physician, Messer Bonifacio Fuzimelia, doctor of laws, Nicolo, goldsmith to Pope Innocent VIII, and Baldassare del Leccio, all very much his friends, whom he represented clad in white armor, burnished and resplendent, as real armor is, and truly with a beautiful manner.

He also portrayed there the Chevalier Messer Buonramino and a certain bishop of Hungary, a man wholly witless, who would wander about Rome all day and then at night would lie down to sleep like a beast in a stable.

The grand halls often welcomed visitors and friends, drawn to the noble estate by reputation and lineage.

According to Monsieur M. J. Maurice, Doctor of Law, chronicling the events for the Annales de Science Physiques in 1893, Monsieur X was a young, energetic, and intelligent man, whose character lent both credibility and precision to his accounts.

Maurice records that it is him, in other words, Mr. X, who day by day recounted the events, and Maurice emphasizes that all the other residents within the castle attested to, under oath and before witnesses, the truth of Mr. X's story.

So it's from Mr. X., the aristocrat's meticulously kept diary, that the dark tale unfolds, as the castle, which had once been a sanctuary of tranquility and refinement, would soon reveal itself as a crucible of the surreal, a place where shadows began to move with intent, and walls seemed to breathe with menace.
