DMOZ

got my first major web development job for websites.com way back in the day.

and AltaVista, and I was a global DMOZ open directory editor.

I could pretty much get listed for any word, any phrase, anytime, anywhere, all the time, instantly back in the day.

In fact, I built an entire web app that with some little hacking on mod rewrite in Apache and MySQL, I can essentially go to a database, put in some keywords, title, description, whatever, and it would automatically show up on our website and it would get instantly indexed by all the search engines and we would rank number one, two, or three within quote, quote, minutes.

So

it was all of this, like, programmatical kind of stuff, right? And then what I'm hearing now is...

Back then, as a former open directory DMOZ editor, I literally had to go to those websites, review those websites, and then actually approve, disapprove, whatever, comment the whole nine, to build what used to be DMOZ or open directory round.

Yeah, a human looked at it and said, it's, yeah, you know what? There's a website about car dealerships and it lists car dealerships and it doesn't have gambling on it.
