Russian botanist Dmitry Ivanovsky took some sap from an infected plant and passed it through a filter to strain out the bacteria.

Except, even without the bacteria, the sap from the infected plants still spread the disease.

Turns out, it was spreading through what was then perceived to be a contagious living fluid, not a bacterium at all.
