It's consistency.

5 players who must be back for the Nationals next year
S
5:32Spencer NusbaumHOST
But, yeah, I mean, you think that you have those spots in the rotation sorted out and potentially we'll be talking about some of them coming up here, but you think about potentially going with Cavalli, Early, Alvarez, and then it's TBD behind that, right? You would hope they sign a starter for agency.
S
5:56Spencer NusbaumHOST
And then between a number of guys, whether it's DJ Herz, Riley Cornelio, Harleen Susana, Travis Sikora, if he's healthy and just blows you out of the water in spring training, although maybe that one would take a bit longer.
S
6:13Spencer NusbaumHOST
Um, there are, you know, Jake Irvin, um, if the team decides to bring him back, there are a number of options where we're an off season away from knowing for sure.
S
6:22Spencer NusbaumHOST
Um, but I just kind of like Riley and that sort of, um, Brad Lord with, you know, more strikeouts and more walks.

Episode 762 - Mets Season Comes to an End
E
36:09Evan RobertsHOST
Let's get the game three of this series.
E
36:11Evan RobertsHOST
Shaw Mania, DJ Herz in the final game of the 2026 regular season.
E
36:16Evan RobertsHOST
We saw Ronnie Mauricio right-handed, hit a two-run home run, his third at-bat, or his third plate appearance in a row in which he went deep.
E
36:24Evan RobertsHOST
And then as far as Lindor is concerned, good for him.
E
36:51Evan RobertsHOST
And I like that because Lindor's bat from the right side has been cool this season.
E
36:59Evan RobertsHOST
I'm not worried about it because we've seen the opposite happen two years ago when he couldn't hit from the left side.
E
37:04Evan RobertsHOST
But it was very nice in his first two at-bats of the game against the left-hander in DJ Herz to have a single to right field and then the home run to left field for his 300th home run.
E
37:14Evan RobertsHOST
Lindor ends up finishing this season with 21 home runs and 49 RBIs, but he missed a ton of time.
HOPE: The 2026 Washington Nationals Have Reinstated HOPE For 2027 & Beyond
R
21:33Ryan ClaryHOST
Like, Andrew Alvarez, what he did in the second half, he added a second arm to this rotation that I don't think anybody expected.
R
21:41Ryan ClaryHOST
Jake Irvin at times didn't look all too great, but you get DJ Herz back healthy.
R
21:45Ryan ClaryHOST
Connolly Early comes back to him this season.
R
21:47Ryan ClaryHOST
And all of a sudden, you've got a pretty decent starting rotation with Cade Cavalli looking like an all-star Cy Young caliber type of pitcher.

8.5 is the total, under is minus 120, and the over is even, and I'm going to be in on that over.
G
37:44Greg PetersonHOST
I did some of my total at an 8.9. For DJ Herz, when he was getting consistent starts in 2024, if I'm not mistaken, and he was relatively solid, missed the entirety of the 2025 season, made his first start at the minor league level a few nights ago against the Tigers, gave up four runs in four innings, was actually solid at the minor league level, was getting over 10 strikeouts per nine innings, so I think that start number two to close out the season will be a little bit better.
G
38:08Greg PetersonHOST
When he was starting at the major league level in 2024, he was a 10.8 strikeout per nine inning guy, but also had his command issues with about 3.7 walks per nine innings.
G
38:16Greg PetersonHOST
And Sean Manea is not in very good form.
Smooth Outing for Early in Saturday Defeat
M
14:58Mark ZuckermanHOST
Yes, these guys need to show what they can do over an entire Major League season, but that's as good of a foundation from a rotation standpoint as this team has had since the rebuild started, and that is critical to what they're trying to accomplish here.
A
15:14Al GaldiHOST
Absolutely, to say nothing of what maybe possibly could be with Josiah Gray, what maybe possibly could be with DJ Herz, and like we said, you know, maybe there is an acquisition.
A
15:24Al GaldiHOST
Maybe there are multiple acquisitions coming to the starting pitching rotation.
A
15:28Al GaldiHOST
Who knows? [upbeat jingle] [gentle music]
17 MINS LATER
A
32:15Al GaldiHOST
Um, we'll see what goes down with James Wood.
A
32:17Al GaldiHOST
We'll see what goes down from a weather standpoint.
A
32:19Al GaldiHOST
DJ Herz, uh, will be pitching, assuming the game is played.
A
32:22Al GaldiHOST
Looking forward to that.

And like we said, Andrew Alvarez and Jake Irving, they're going to be facing them.
C
87:41CarsonHOST
And then I think, and again, like I said, DJ Herz would be the third guy.
C
87:45CarsonHOST
Maybe it does change.
C

I have absolutely no idea.
