S1E16: It's Not My Job To Do Everything, w/ Paula Faris
P
5:08Paula FarisGUEST
Right now, it's your kid, your problem, which sucks, right? Okay, but what I've really been stewing on is how much of the issue is me at home, trying to do too much, trying to carry too much, cutting my kids off at the knees, wearing this mommy martyrdom badge.
P
5:25Paula FarisGUEST
So that's something that I'm really been focusing on is empowering my kids to do more at home, so that I don't have to carry that burden so that it does feel like we're, we're on the same team and especially with my boys I have a daughter and two sons I think with daughters we tend to think they're just a little bit more capable because they're girls right so the the care the the division of labor but also the caring right um my daughter i've always said you know what you can do your laundry you can figure it out because she's a girl and then my boys i've coddled them too much oh i'll do it for you you know because mommy wants to do everything for you and so seeing how i'm parenting my kids differently right at home the things that are happening in my own home um but also what are my boys learning about women from me about the role of women in the home, in the workplace, in the world, right? So that's something I think, you know, off camera, Greer, you were talking about that new doc that Reshma put out, No Country for Mothers.

And instead of... know making assumptions we somebody owns it right and then when you own it you've already had a conversation a healthy conversation when emotions are low and cognition is high don't have what you're like upset with one another you're having a conversation about what is this what is an acceptable standard of uh standard for this like if if it's your job to pack the lunches You know, I can't complain about it if you're doing it your way, but we've already had this conversation.

S
7:36Stephen EscaleraNARRATOR
The effects of the division of labor in the general business of society will be more easily understood by considering in what manner it operates in some particular manufacturers.
S
7:46Stephen EscaleraNARRATOR
It is commonly supposed to be carried furthest in some very trifling ones.
S
7:50Stephen EscaleraNARRATOR
Not perhaps that it is really carried further in them than in others of more importance, but in those trifling manufacturers which are destined to supply the small wants of but a small number of people, the whole number of workmen must necessarily be small, and those employed in every different branch of the work can often be collected into the same workhouse and placed at once under the view of the spectator.
S
8:27Stephen EscaleraNARRATOR
We can seldom see more at one time than those employed in one single branch.
S
8:32Stephen EscaleraNARRATOR
Though in such manufacturers, therefore, the work may really be divided into a much greater number of parts than in those of a more trifling nature, the division is not near so obvious and has accordingly been much less observed.
S
8:46Stephen EscaleraNARRATOR
To take an example, therefore, from a very trifling manufacturer, but one in which the division of labor has been very often taken notice of, the trade of a pen maker.

Touched Out, Rejected & Running on Empty: Intimacy After Baby, with Amanda Jade from The Parents Room
R
19:28Rashelle LeahyHOST
Yeah, and I think some really great conversations come out of our group, where I think one lady was saying that when her, when she had her first child, and her husband, they were really strong.
R
19:38Rashelle LeahyHOST
Then she was saying that they had a really good conversation around the expectations of the household, because, perfect example, they're both working full time, so then they both, the division of labor in terms of the housework, the mental load of the bills, and things like that, that was always divided equally.
R
19:55Rashelle LeahyHOST
And we sort of had a similar thing, my husband and I, before we had kids, where on a Saturday morning, I would do the inside, he would do the outside.
R
20:01Rashelle LeahyHOST
We'd go do groceries together, we'd meal prep together, and then that was set for the week, right? But once you have a baby, I think that sometimes those expectations change, because we sometimes may default to that old mentality of the woman is at home, therefore she's doing all of the household, all of the housework, and caring for the baby.
R
20:18Rashelle LeahyHOST
So this, this woman in the group was like, "Well, no, the division of labor is still equal, because my job is to look after the baby, and his job is to go out and work.
R
20:27Rashelle LeahyHOST
So now we're still doing that division of labor in terms of the housework, in terms of the mental load for the finances and paying bills and things like that," which I thought was a really, was a really good topic and a really good sort of stance on things.
R
20:40Rashelle LeahyHOST
