Divine Service

So to go and to have these conversations with him as soon as you can in as friendly way as possible is going to be really good.

But to the really kind of difference that's going on here, the posture that we are after in the divine service is one of reverent joy.

And those two things are in a little bit of tension with one another.

In other words, reverence is constraining joy.

The same God who filled the temple with glory and who was covering Mount Sinai with cloud and fire and who destroyed the sons of Aaron and when they offered the profane incense and struck down Ananias and Sapphira when they lied to the Holy Spirit, that is Jesus who sits with sinners.

And so the Lord is holy and the Lord is merciful.

And our divine service will confess both of those, not to the expense of one another, And so the reverence with which we treat the holy things of God is incredibly important.

If we become used to or familiar with the holiness of God, this is a great danger.

So Satan says, oh, you know, you can't save yourself by your works.

So prayer and the study of God's word and receiving God's ministry in the divine service, why, that would be a work.

So stay away from those things on the basis of you can't save yourself by your own works.

He's a sly dog, but when you hear that, it says, well, that makes no sense.

Undivided adoration to the great Jehovah live.

Several things to highlight.

So, isn't it interesting that the cup and the bread are... aren't a remembrance, but rather literally participation in the death and resurrection of Christ, 1 Corinthians 11.

Which is one of the few advantages to Divine Service 1 and 2.

Yes, yes.

Is that you actually have those words in the liturgy.

Yeah.

Well, I said

that about the offertory in Divine Service Setting 1 in our LSB.

Yeah.

I mean, like, what's with this whole confess your sin thing? I mean, what sins do I really have to confess? Let me put it in a question form for your listeners.

So listeners who attend the divine service, have you ever gone to your pastor and asked him to give you more time during the period of silence for confession in the divine service? If it's happened, it doesn't happen very often.

But are we really able to confess the breadth and the depth of our sins in those five seconds? I mean, are we really able to cover our week of sins in five seconds? Really? And do we really understand the burning purity of perfection that is God's holiness? I've used this image of the glass blowing oven before, but that oven gets over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

And if you ever watch glass blowers, they don't just walk up to the oven and stick their head in there to see how things are progressing, right? If they did that, they'd be dead.

We are the Lord's sake in God's faithfulness.

Several announcements.

There is youth group today after the 10.30 service.

Psalm 86 provides the prayerful heart of this command, expressing a deep, knowing hunger for God's presence, which imparts salvation, strength, and, and, and resulting grace.

By chanting this Psalm at the beginning of the Divine Service, the Church anchors its primary longing in God's kingdom before turning to consider other daily needs.

In his homilies on Galatians and homilies on 1 Corinthians, St. John Chrysostom identified the law of Christ with Jesus's upper room mandate, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you," John 13 verse 34.

Chrysostom argues that at the Eucharistic table, Christ distributes His body equally to all and without distinction of status, and therefore, to receive the sacrament of the altar while refusing to bear a brother's spiritual fall or poverty, Galatians 6:1, contradicts the very nature of the Eucharistic assembly.

It's for this reason that we have the exchanging of the peace that frequently takes place in the divine service, getting right with our brother, connecting with them, understanding that this Eucharistic engagement not only has a vertical dimension, but also a horizontal.

So St. Augustine of Hippo says this in his Eucharistic sermons and writings on Galatians.

So we wrap up this to preface before the Sanctus and we say, therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and saying.

And then if you look at that Sanctus, like especially in Divine Service 3, it's very clear.

look what's happening there so we sing these words holy holy holy and this is the song of heaven and then what do we connect it to hosanna hosanna hosanna and this is the song of earth okay so look what we're doing we just got done saying therefore with angels and archangels all the company of heaven right everyone in heaven we're going to worship you we're going to join earth's worship to heaven's worship so what do we do we take holy holy holy that's the song of heaven and we combine it with hosanna hosanna hosanna that's the song of earth and look what we've done we've put them together in one song and we're saying heaven and earth are connected joined together in the sacrament of the altar so in a very real sense heaven is here god is here this is a marvelous confession so we may not know where the heaven is where psalm 113 says god looks down from but we can know where heaven meets earth and that is in the sacrament of the altar

secular worldviews, suffering is an ultimate evil, and it's to be avoided at all costs.

True obedience to the word inevitably leads to the worship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The divine service of the Holy Mass is precisely where we go with the people of God to experience the same blessings in the encounter with Christ and the Spirit in the wholesome word of God and the blessed sacrament of the altar, which is the manifestation of divine thanksgiving, evoking our own thanksgiving.
