I'm the lead research engineer at the Distributed AI Research Institute, or DARE.

In this moment, there's a really particular hype slash horror story we've been hearing.

that either AI is going to save us or destroy us, but there are so many other futures that are possible.

She then started a nonprofit to do some of the work they wouldn't let her do there.

And shortly after that started, I joined her.

So I've been at that nonprofit, the Distributed AI Research Institute, ever since.

So

You know you can always drop the thing.

Uh, Timnit Gebru, um, the founder and executive director of the DAIR Institute.

Mm-hmm.

Oh, yeah.

We really don't.

Dr. Gebru founded the DAIR Institute, which stands for Distributed AI Research, and they compiled something called the AI Resist List.

This isn't just about complaining or pointing out the problems.

It's a blueprint for an entirely different, highly achievable future.

We begin today's show with a leading critic of the AI industry, Timnit Gebru.

She's an AI researcher and the founder and executive director of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, or DARE.

Prior to that, she served as co-lead of the ethical AI research team at Google.

She was fired in 2020 for writing a paper warning about the dangers of large language models and raising issues of discrimination in the workplace.

Timnit is the founder and executive director of the DAIR Institute.

DAIR stands for Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research.

Timnit is also a co-founder of Black in AI, a nonprofit working to advocate for the Black community in the field of AI.

And early next year, she's coming out with a book called Deep Unlearning: The Rise of AI and the Radicalization of a Tech Idealist.
