Distance education

Uh, students who are, uh, many of whom are living on the campus and are able to study together and pray and worship together and, uh, take their meals together and really build a community.

Um, and that itself actually also benefits our distance education program.

Three of our four master's programs are fully available online, no residential requirement, although we love it when our distance students come to visit.

But what I think our distance students experience, um, really is a kind of, uh, window into a point of access to the on-campus community we have, beginning with the faculty and then the on-campus students.

Irish College of GPs cardiovascular lead.

Eamon recently wrote a distance learning article for Forum magazine published in June 25 titled Heart Failure Prevention in Primary Care.

This article provides a timely overview of changes to heart failure management since the last heart failure quick reference guideline published by the Irish College of GPs in 2019 and the Forum update is an invaluable one that I would recommend all GPs to read.

In our discussion, Eamon and I reviewed elements from the June 25 article, including the role and relevance of NT-ProBNP, new evidence-backed therapies in HFPEF, that's heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, the four pharmacological pillars in managing HFREF, or heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, medications we can reasonably commence for all suspected heart failure patients while we await echocardiogram and further cardiology input, and considerations for patients who may be moving towards palliative care.

And I suppose that marked diuresis is what helps them in terms of symptoms, but it's also what limits them in terms of...

the kind of poor quality of life that people have when they're on high doses of diuretic.

But it's an interesting concept I hadn't come across before I had seen that article myself and I thought it was worth letting people know about it in the distance learning module.

And it's one that jumped out at me as well, Eamonn, because I'm probably guilty in the past of starting somebody on a loop diuretic and then saying to them, let's see how that goes with your symptoms and then bringing them back for review and asking them about symptoms and re-examining.
