Discovery Expedition

Both Scott and Amundsen were experienced polar explorers.

Scott had led the Discovery Expedition to Antarctica from 1901 to 1904, got within 460 miles of the pole before turning back.

Amundsen had been first mate on the Belgica Expedition, the first to winter in Antarctica, and had successfully navigated the Northwest Passage.

These weren't amateurs, and both of them lied to get there.
