Disability-adjusted life year

The burden is massive.

To quantify this, the chapter discusses DALYs and YLDs.

Yes.

These are the standard metrics used by the World Health Organization to measure the global burden of disease.

DALYs stand for Disability Adjusted Life Years, which combines years of life lost to premature mortality and years lived with a disability.

And YLDs…

YLDs specifically measure years lived with disability.

And so not only looking at, um, interventions that are zero cents on the dollar, um, is just a very arbitrary constraint to place on how we can think about maximizing impact on whatever metric you're talking about.

Could be, you know, health for, for DALYs or in our case these, these, uh, DCYs, double consumption years.

So, you know, when it-- When I think about, um, how, you know, we wanna maximize our, our per dollar, um, uh, impact that, that, that we're delivering, you know, if we take the example of, um, you know, this, this Italian, uh, labor mobility business that we're, we're, we're helping incubate and, and get started, um, you know, they're going to be, um, you know, uh, recruiting workers in Kenya, uh, and then placing them in hotels in Italy.

The hotel in Italy is going to pay them €4,000 per worker.
