C
1:50Chad RuffinHOST
Like, it's rare that I could look at a game and just, like, know what engine it's on.
C
1:55Chad RuffinHOST
I happen to know this because apparently there's a bug with Unreal and, like, the version of DirectX and the specific processor that I have that interact badly that did not let me launch the game.
C
2:12Chad RuffinHOST
Yeah.
C
2:14Chad RuffinHOST
Which was like a whole thing.
C
2:17Chad RuffinHOST
But I did know that it was a 3D game going in.
C
2:20Chad RuffinHOST
But if I didn't, I would have been tipped off when the game repeatedly crashed on startup until I changed the DirectX version.
C
2:30Chad RuffinHOST
But yeah, so yeah, it is.

So I don't know, like, again, I, I can, um, I, I can go off this all day, but like, I'm, I'm, I've always been skeptical.
M
36:45MattHOST
Um, Yes, it is a DirectX 12 upgrade version of CryEngine for Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
M
36:51MattHOST
But I've always been skeptical of ray tracing, and now I'm just like, this has just made things worse.
M

It's just had an overall net negative impact on the game industry with this performance hog.

I'm not sure if he did it or somebody else, but it worked.
S

And I was going to go work on DirectX because I was like, I'll hide out.
S
46:10Seamus BlackleyGUEST
Because I'm a failure, nobody wants my name with this thing.

I had it on Microsoft.

And so I looked at it purely... as a technical exercise.

It reduces memory access spikes and lets you write templates that stay consistent across sessions.

When it comes to audio effects inside South Studio, you still get the full stack, VSTs, DirectX, native plugins, but the plugin host itself is also optimized for minimal overhead.
T

That means your bus compressors or equalizers are running at a lower sample rate latency than most other hosts with similar functionality.

You can't overstate how that translates into creative work.

S
2:04ShaneHOST
If you are aware of something called DirectX on Windows, what DirectX is, is it's a library, a set of technologies that Microsoft provides that lets your GPU interface with various applications and games and then display those things on your screen.

Vulkan is something that is more so used on the Mac OS and Linux side.

BlueSky Users Bully Paint.NET Dev Into Dropping AI Coded Feature
B
0:14Bryan LundukeHOST
But he went over to Blue Sky and he posted about a new feature that he had developed using Claude, the AI toolkit, AI system, to essentially vibe code a clean room, reverse engineered implementation of Direct2D running a in a version of paint.net which means that it can now run on linux under wine so uh the the basic high level version of it is this and it's actually kind of neat um paint.net right is a windows focused application it used to be possible to run versions of it under linux under Wine and such.
B
0:57Bryan LundukeHOST
That hasn't really been possible because of Direct2D and DirectX features that have been added into Paint.NET that just doesn't work quite right in Wine.
B
1:06Bryan LundukeHOST
Real edge case stuff, right? And so in order to make it work, and I think this has been a big request from users of Paint.NET for a long time, in order to make it work, the developer needed to create an implementation of certain portions of Direct2D inside of Paint.net, which is a lot of work.
B
1:28Bryan LundukeHOST
And he was like, man, this is going to take forever.
