Diapause is a technical name for a kind of insect hibernation.

And ladybugs will often do sort of a sequence of gathering a giant group, promiscuously mate all over the group, all the males and females getting together, and then kind of do this diapause, this insect type of hibernation.

And then everybody hatches all at once.
