S11 E8: Risk (Part 1)

It's just a bummer.
C
13:25CarmenHOST
Anyways, Risk is a song off of the album Diamond Eyes.
C
13:30CarmenHOST
It's the sixth studio album by the Deftones, and it was released May 4th, May the 4th be with you, 2010.
C
13:38CarmenHOST
And this song, uh, did not have a ton of, like, charting information on it, but the album itself did pretty well.
C
13:46CarmenHOST
The singles off of the album were Diamond Eyes, Rocket Skates, Sextape, title of your sex tape, You've Seen the Butcher, and the charting-

One Off #5 - Deftones' Eros

Like, they really don't want us to listen to it." But it's l- i- it's like you said, it's, it's Deftones I hadn't heard yet.
J
3:56Justin WilsonHOST
It's a, a missing link in between, like, kind of where I initially kind of fell away from the band to Diamond Eyes which is what really brought me back as a Deftones fan.
J
4:07Justin WilsonHOST
It's, so it's like I really wanted that link, like, to see what it sounded like.
J
4:14Justin WilsonHOST
And you know, then, uh, yeah, I, I found it a third time and I, I may or may not have downloaded it.
J
7:38Justin WilsonHOST
Mm-hmm

... up to Saturday Night Wrist, and even [sniffs] listening to Eros now, it does make, it does make that sort of transition period a bit more obvious.
J
7:50JoshGUEST
Um, I feel like they continued [sniffs] in the experimentation of like a Saturday Night Wrist, but you can still see the seeds of a Diamond Eyes in there.
J
8:02JoshGUEST
But I feel like it definitely sort of links more to where they were going with Saturday Night Wrist, except the band seemed united, uh, like a united front in the making of this, this album.
Deftones' Brilliant, Soaring Epic: Koi No Yokan

Like, so what were your opinions on the next couple albums? Like Self-Titled and Saturday Night Rists?
B
17:16BrianHOST
saturday night wrist i enjoy it's on i have a gigantic playlist that just shuffles when i'm splitting wood and i have no problem when those come on the diamond eyes album is another really solid album like i didn't have any issues with those like even gore and ohms i find stuff about those albums that i really like They kind of lost me with this last one.
B
17:39BrianHOST
Um, okay.
B
17:40BrianHOST
I've listened to private music a couple of times being like, I should like this and it just hasn't stuck.

so they did a really good job when they picked up Sergio Vega um now the reason they picked up Sergio Vega to play bass after Chi Chang's accident was he was in Quicksand and Quicksand is one of the bands that Deftone cites as an influence so imagine being able to like pull somebody that you like and respect and you know their music and and have them join your band like it's not ideal you don't want to ever lose a bandmate and if you're going to bring somebody in they didn't go the fan route we've talked about that in a few episodes where suddenly the bassist was a former fan right they found somebody that they were fans of themselves and And his bass work on this album is outstanding, and it's kind of forward.
B
24:38BrianHOST
There's a lot of bass elements in the album.
B
24:41BrianHOST
And Chino has said that Vega made a bigger contribution to Koi no Yokan than he had previously on Diamond Eyes.
B
24:48BrianHOST
And you can hear it sonically in how the songs are produced.

It has grown on me quite a bit.

And actually the songs they play live, sound fucking huge so it's kind of weird how that's worked out in the long run but you get some stuff from Koi no Yokan as well and you know they'll lean into Diamond Eyes quite a bit it's a good set so they were very very very good I think their hydro performance was better I think the visuals in the outdoor level was insane and to see Deftones play in front of a crowd that big in Scotland It's kind of nuts where we are now with that band, considering how old they are.
D
24:51DuncanHOST
I've got a theory that Deftones maybe have two albums left in them.
D
24:54DuncanHOST
They've recently sold off their music catalogue as well, so they don't really need to do anything else.
