Devonshire Sound Studios

A row of folding chairs where the string players will sit later in the week, and a tape box on the console with one word written on the spine in marker, a working title that nobody, it turns out, will ever get around to changing.

This is Devonshire Studios in Los Angeles, and the record being made here is Jerry Garcia's second solo album.

But Garcia's not in the room.

Not yet.

Years later, the label gave up and made it official.

People have been arguing about this for a long time, and they are no closer.

When was it actually made? The credits say Devonshire Studios in February.

Richard Loren, Garcia's manager, who went down with him, wrote in his memoir that most of the recording took place in Los Angeles in the last days of December.
