Deuteronomy 25

So they sat down.

There's more places to recount in the Old Testament, Deuteronomy 25, that we've often referenced in light of this Old Testament custom and right of redemption and others.

where a community was needed, a group of elders, a group that would be witnesses.

And I don't want to go off on too much of a rabbit trail, a tangent here, but to say community has always been part of the central theme of the story of redemption.

Or to Hamas is really what he's doing, but they supposedly represent the Palestinians.

His site is from Deuteronomy 25.

Let's read it.

Verse 17.

We're going to come to find out that there is a relative nearer.

And there's been a lot of ink that's been spilled on this, whether it's in line with what's called in Deuteronomy 25, the Leveret marriage.

We talked a bit about that last week.

The brother-in-law, of course, Ruth's husband, Malon.

So who would engage in the letter I marriage? It depended on who was the closest and who was willing to do it.

Now, in Deuteronomy 25, we see this provision in the Torah.

Deuteronomy chapter 25, verse five.

When brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, The wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man.

Right.

So they're trying to come up with a good counterexample from the Bible itself, right? And this is the, the example of a, a so-called levirate marriage, and so it's, it's in Deuteronomy 25, so it's not like the Sadducees, you know, they're not idiots.

They know their Bible.

And basically it says, you know, if a man has a wife and he dies before, you know, she bears him a, you know, bears him a, a child, then his brother has the responsibility, the responsibility to take that woman as his wife and raise up children as if they were his brother's, okay? And, and it even explicitly says in Deuteronomy 25, and I think this is really worth pointing out, it says, "And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, and that name shall not be blotted out of Israel." Because that's the concern here, that it will not be blotted out of Israel.

In other words, he will not sort of lose his historic place within the people of God.

You know, it says, "He blessed them and said, you know, 'Be fruitful and multiply.'" You know, so it doesn't even say it's a command.

It's a blessing, and you know, so it's a good thing.

It is an ancient, demonic, covenantal hatred.

So, again, back all the way in Deuteronomy 25, verse 19, Israel was told, blot out the memory of Amalek.

This is a repeated theme throughout Torah, and then later in Samuel, wipe them out, wipe them out.

But they didn't.

So you have this repeated theme, remember when Amalek attacked us, remember.

And so in Deuteronomy 25, it describes it with a little bit more detail.

Remember what Amalek did to you along the way when you came up out of Egypt, how he met you along the way.

Now notice this, and he attacked among you the stragglers at the rear.

Say, verse 8, I these things as a man, or saith not the law the same thing? For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn.

Interesting scripture, Deuteronomy 25, verse 4.

The ox that is treading out the corn, man, the ox that's treading the corn or plowing the field, don't muzzle his mouth.

Let him eat in the field that he's plowing in.

where he declares in Timothy 5, 1 Timothy, let the elders that rule be counted worthy of double honor.

That's two times the remuneration, especially those who labor in the word and in doctrine.

For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the arcs that treads out the corn, and the laborer is worthy of his hire.

So Paul uses this verse, not only to the Corinthians, but in sharing with his protege, Timothy.
