I'm going to quote you from a study by Kemenes and Forsberg.

They quote, "...the biomass of Alecthonus insectivore increased in channels with a higher percentage of sandy bottom substrate." Detritivorous insectivore biomass, in contrast, increased significantly in channels with a higher percentage of leaf substrate.

General insectivores tended to increase in streams with higher proportions of leafy substrate, too.

So what's the implication for us as hobbyists? Well, for one thing, it's likely that the substrate material that we use in our tanks can have a significant chemical impact on the water.
